Rommy bowed her head once more. “Thank you,” she said. She met the wolf leader’s eyes, hazel to golden. An understanding passed between them. Then the moment was gone, and the wolf pack melted back into the forest. She looked back at Lobo’s body still on the ground, wondering if they should try to bury him. While she watched, a silver mist covered Lobo’s body. Then, a wisp of silvery smoke rose into the air. When the mist cleared, his body was gone.

Rommy turned, and found Finn, Alice, and the three fairies stared at her, waiting for what they should do next. She wasn’t sure how she had become the leader of this ragtag group—a Lost boy, a homeless girl, and four fairies, one of whom was very grumpy—but she was. They were all looking to her to know what to do next.

Looking at their expectant faces, a heavy weight settled on Rommy’s shoulders. “I think we should go see Little Owl,” she said finally. “She’ll want to know what’s happened and will be worried. Plus, maybe she’ll be able to tell us where we can start looking for Tinkerbell.”

“What about your friend, Francie?” asked Finn.

“Francie can hold her own until we figure out how to get her away from Pan,” said Rommy. She gave a grim smile. “Pan may have bitten off more than he can chew.”

“How about your old man?” asked Alice. Her tears had stopped, but the little girl kept glancing to where Lobo had been lying. “Should we send a message or something? He’s going to be awful sore we skipped out on him.”

“Papa will have to wait,” said Rommy. “I don’t want him to worry, but he’ll just try to stop me. And if I go back, I’ll never get away again. He’ll try to tuck me away somewhere safe.” She looked at Finn, who had the grace to duck his head. “I can’t let that happen until we find this key and turn that lock.”

Rommy looked at the fairies. “You don’t have to come with us, you know,” she said. “You did more than your fair share in helping us find Unilisi.”

Balo glowered at her. “Oh, so now that the hard part is over, you want to get rid of us,” he grumbled. “Well, you can just take that thought right out of your head. If you think I’m going to just flutter off to please you, you have another thing coming.”

A smile tugged at her lips, but Rommy managed to keep a straight face. Nissa alighted on Finn’s shoulder. “We will help you, Andromeda Cavendish. We will help you with your quest.”

Kalen and Talen lifted their tiny spears to show they were with her.

She looked at all of them. “Well, I guess we better get started,” she said.

Together they pushed off the ground and into the air. With Rommy leading the way, they headed toward Little Owl’s home. As they flew, Rommy wasn’t sure how they would accomplish rescuing Francie, dealing with her father, and closing the passage to Neverland. But she had spent most of her time since she had left Chattingham’s not knowing what she was doing. It hadn’t stopped her yet.
